The Golden Quill comes to Wilsona
Lake Los Angeles – Wilsona School District – Shirley Harriman, a longtime journalist dedicated to covering public school news, has been honored with the prestigious Golden Quill Award from the California State Boards Association (CSBA). This award celebrates the vital role of journalists in enhancing public understanding of school objectives, operations, achievements, and opportunities.
The Golden Quill is awarded for fair, insightful, and accurate reporting on public schools, whether in print, broadcast, or online. The criteria for the award are rigorous, requiring candidates to demonstrate fairness, transparency, strong relationships, and a deep understanding of the mission of public education.
Superintendent Steve Doyle highlighted Harriman’s significant contributions to the Wilsona and Keppel School Districts, saying, “Shirley, your work has been a cornerstone in fostering the bond between Wilsona and our community. You have given our schools and students a platform to shine, and in doing so, you have made an indelible impact on the lives of countless individuals.”
Reflecting on the honor, Harriman said, “I went to Mr. Doyle’s office with pen and pad, ready to help with whatever he needed for the district. I never expected to be told I was a Golden Quill winner for the state. After the shock wore off, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. It’s an honor I never saw coming.”
