Mixed Media Art Class Exhibit on Display at Legacy Commons
PALMDALE – A new art exhibit created by the students of the Legacy Commons for Active Seniors Mixed Media Art Class is on display now through April 30. Admission is free and the public is invited. “In visual art, mixed media is an artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed,” said Volunteer Instructor Annie Wallack. “Assemblages and collages are two common examples of art using different media that will make use of different materials including cloth, paper and /or wood.” The Mixed Media Art Class meets every Monday from 1 to 3 pm and is having a ball creating art for everyone to see. “This class ROCKS!” said class member Cathy Richman enthusiastically. Classmate Cheryl Huff concurs. “Using odds and ends from around the house interested me,” she said. “ Come and play at this class!” Instructor Wallack is no stranger to art. She has a degree in fine arts from Humboldt State University and has taught art at UC Riverside and Riverside City College. She is also a creative arts counselor. Although Wallach had been working on and off in mixed media since the 1990’s, she was reintroduced to the medium ironically by Janet Briggs--- a former Legacy Commons volunteer who taught a similar class. After Briggs moved out of the area two years ago, Wallach took over the class and has led it ever since. The class is free and open to anyone 55 and older. “No art experience required,” Wallach said, “Just a willingness to have fun and express yourself through mixed media art, words and images.” Legacy Commons is located at 930 East Avenue Q-9, and is open Monday through Thursday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm and Friday’s from 8 am to 12 noon.
