Aggressive driving is a major concern for our residents and a real threat to the safety of all road users. Any unsafe driving behavior, performed deliberately and with ill intention or disregard for safety can qualify as aggressive driving.
Per a AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study, many drivers admitted having let their anger and frustration get the best of them at least once in the past year, engaging in behaviors such as yelling, honking, gesturing and purposefully tailgating another driver. The same study found that nearly 8 MILLION drivers had gotten out of their car to confront another driver or even bumped or rammed another car on purpose!
So what can you do to remain safe?
Steer clear. Give angry/aggressive drivers lots of room. Put as much distance between your car and the other vehicle and never pull off to handle things in person.
Avoid eye contact. If another driver is gesturing or acting angry, don't make eye contact. Avoid the other party and don't make things personal.
Get help. If you believe the other driver is following you or is trying to start a fight, get help. Even if it is the opposite direction you mean to go, start heading towards a local police station. Lancaster Sheriff's Station is located at 501 West Lancaster Boulevard, right on the corner of Sierra Highway and Lancaster Boulevard. Do not go home and do not get out of your car. The angry party is usually discouraged when they realize you are heading towards a police station.
Be a cautious and polite driver. One angry driver can't start a fight unless another driver is willing to join in. So keep your cool, stay in your car and don't let your temper get the best of you!
